Sorakuen Garden was originally the private residence of the Kodera family, a prominent merchant family in Kobe. The garden was built on the grounds of Taijiro Kodera's residence, the father of former Kobe City Mayor Kenkichi Kodera. After coming under the ownership of the city of Kobe, it was named “Sorakuen” and opened to the public, allowing visitors to enjoy its beauty and historical significance.

Garden Layout and Features

The garden spans approximately 19,566 square meters and features a traditional Japanese garden design. Key attractions include a central pond surrounded by stepping stones, stone bridges, and a waterfall. The grounds are adorned with a cycad wood, large camphor trees estimated to be over 500 years old, vibrant azaleas in spring, and stunning maple trees displaying their autumn colors.

Historic Structures

Sorakuen Garden is home to several historic structures that add to its charm. The Former Hassam House, a Western-style building, was originally located in Kitano-cho and was moved to the garden. This house, once the residence of an Anglo-Indian trader, stands as a unique architectural contrast to the traditional Japanese elements. Additionally, the garden includes the Funeyakata houseboat, a rare example of a “Kawagozabune” used by the Lord of the Himeji Clan during the Edo period. The garden is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the last entry at 4:30 PM. It is closed every Thursday (or the following day if a national holiday falls on a Thursday) and from December 29th to January 3rd. Admission fees are 300 yen for adults and 150 yen for children.

Group Discounts and Yearly Passes

Group discounts are available, with 10% off for groups of 15-99 people, 20% off for groups of 100-299 people, and 30% off for groups of 300 or more. A yearly pass, known as the Four Seasons Tricolor Card, is also available, granting access to Sorakuen Garden, Kobe Municipal Arboretum, and SumaRikyu Park. The yearly pass costs 900 yen for adults and 450 yen for children.

Sorakuen Garden is conveniently located near public transportation. It is a 10-minute walk northwest of Motomachi Station (JR and Hanshin Railways) and a 5-minute walk north of Kencho-mae Station (Kobe Subway).
