Japan's love for KitKats has led to the creation of unique experiences, such as the KitKat Chocolatory, where you can make your own custom KitKat bars. Located in various spots, including the now-closed Miyashita Park in Shibuya, this experience offers a fun and interactive way to enjoy your favorite snack.

Choosing Your Ingredients

When you participate in the My KitKat workshop, you start by selecting your ingredients. You can choose from three types of chocolate: milk, bitter, and ruby, which has a fruity, raspberry-like taste. Alongside your chocolate selection, you get to pick four toppings from a variety of 17 options, including nuts, dried fruits, pretzels, and even edible flowers.

The Process of Making Your KitKat

The process is guided by friendly staff, ensuring it remains easy and enjoyable. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Selecting and Preparing Ingredients: You will receive a checklist to select your chocolate and toppings. The checklist is available in both Japanese and English, making it accessible for international visitors.
  2. Cutting the Wafers: You will be given a wafer to cut into four pieces using a butter knife. This step can be a bit tricky, but it’s crucial for the signature crispiness of the KitKat.
  3. Shaping the Chocolate: After cutting the wafers, you will be given a KitKat mold and a bowl of melted chocolate. You need to scoop and spread the chocolate into the mold, ensuring the wafers are fully submerged.
  4. Removing Air Bubbles: To ensure the chocolate sets properly, you need to rap the mold on the table to remove any air bubbles.
  5. Decorating: Finally, you decorate the bottom of your KitKat bar with your chosen toppings. This is where you can get creative and make your KitKat truly unique.

Reservations and Time Slots

The My KitKat workshop is a popular activity, so reservations are highly recommended. The workshop takes approximately 70 minutes and is available in five time slots per day: 11:30 am, 1:30 pm, 3:30 pm, 5:30 pm, and 7:30 pm. Reservations can be made in-person at the store or online via the official website.

Cost and Additional Perks

The workshop costs 2,000 yen per person, excluding tax. This fee includes the experience of making your own KitKat and a free drink from the KitKat cafe. The cafe offers a variety of treats, including the exclusive KitKat Waffle and chocolate soft serve ice cream made from three types of cacao beans.

Safety and Hygiene

The workshop is conducted with safety and hygiene in mind. Participants are required to sanitize their hands and wear gloves. There are also see-through barriers dividing each workspace, and everyone is expected to wear masks to maintain a safe environment.

Exploring the Surroundings

After completing your workshop, you have the opportunity to explore the surrounding area. Miyashita Park, for example, offers various attractions such as official Studio Ghibli merchandise, a streetwear-inspired Starbucks, and other dining options. Even though the Miyashita Park location is now closed, the experience remains available at other KitKat Chocolatory locations, such as the Saitama branch.
